Icy Wind on K2

Inspired by a friend who climbed five of the seven tallest mountains in the world, Icy Wind on K2 was hand-carved by artist Naomi Sarna from an Avant Mine quartz crystal that she personally chose. The crystal veils and various inclusions inside guided Sarna as she carved it. Orienting the carved crystal point down, she put the natural crystal root up to evoke the rocky, icy, snowy feeling. Reversing the crystal was an artful way to bring out the beautiful characteristics inside the stone. Highly polished windows on the back are surrounded with satin finish surfaces adding an opalescence when it turns.  It is mesmerizing to look at the distortions inside the stone that are created by the light as it moves through the deeply carved center. A particularly complex carving, Icy Wind on K2 took around 500 hours to complete. It is 8.5 inches tall.
