Naomi Sarna always make a point of going to the first day of a gem show and choosing where she wants to make her first purchase. For many years, Sarna has been buying from a stone dealer from Afghanistan. On one particular opening day in Tucson, he had a big smile on his face. He put his hand in his pocket and pulled out an extraordinary, very rare, unheated, natural color pink Topaz. Sarna felt like it came out of the Kipling story “Kim”. The stone sang to Sarna so she bought it on the spot. It was the first sale of the show for the dealer and the first purchase of the show for Sarna, both of which are considered auspicious at gem shows. She brought the Topaz back to her New York City studio and hand-carved it, or as she describes it, “the stone carved itself.” Now the almost 90-carat pink Topaz, certified by the GIA, is the centerpiece of the Camellia Necklace that celebrates the beauty of this Asian flower.
Natural pink Topaz is a very rare gem that gets its color from the element chromium, it is a stone that harmoniously blends the importance of a mineral and the value of a gem. The petals are embellished with pink Diamonds, some from the famed Australian Argyle mine, brown Diamonds, Garnets, Sapphires and Zircons that add nuanced color, texture and spectacular sparkle. The gems are set in 18-karat white gold. The pendant rests on a necklace of natural color Chinese Freshwater Pearls in shades of peach and pink that is finished with Naomi Sarna’s signature clasp adorned with colored Diamonds and Sapphires.
